Analysis of the differences in travel behaviour between Pay As You Go and season ticket holders using smart card data
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper establishes several approaches of assessing whether the use of different fare payment options affect passenger travel behaviour. The analysis compares the behavioural traits of season ticket (Travelcard) holders against those who travel on a Pay As You Go (PAYG) basis, on the London Underground over a fourmonth period. The regularity of passenger journeys is considered through the extent of both their spatial and temporal variation. Temporal analysis revealed that the journey durations of PAYG users were consistently more variable. Spatial analysis provided mixed indications, but highlighted the contrasts in passenger composition for each fare option. Overall, the results show that the PAYG system is suitable for a wide range of users, and that regular commuters behave indifferently regardless of their fare. Neither pricing structures have been shown to encourage substantially more predictable travel behaviour, but rather that they appeal to different groups of individuals.

Behavioural analysis of railway passengers using smart card data
Smart card systems have been spreading globally not only for purchasing general goods and services, but also for fare payment of public transport. When an individual traveller is holding a public transport smart card, the precise times of his/her passing through ticket gates are recorded in the smart card system. The longitudinal smart card data of a large number of passengers have been stored ...
متن کاملMining Public Transport User Behaviour from Smart Card Data
In urban public transport, smart card data is made of millions of observations of users boarding vehicles over the network across several days. The issue addresses whether data mining techniques can be used to study user behaviour from these observations. This must be done with the help of transportation planning knowledge. Hence, this paper presents a common “transportation planning/data minin...

The smart card system has been applied for all subway and bus in Seoul metropolitan area since 2004. In Seoul area public transport more than 90% of passengers use smart cards to pay fare. The boarding and alighting information from the smart cards enable to calculate the OD (origindestination) and total travel distance of each transit passenger. The smart card system of Seoul is operated as on...
